Adult Coloring Book – A humorous coloring book for adults.

Over the past few months, I have been working on an adult coloring book. While coloring books are perceived as "childish" and "only for kids," adult coloring books have become super popular over the past few years. This is probably due to the pandemic and everyone being bored, but I think it has more to do with the fact that coloring is fun, relaxing, and helps reduce anxiety levels! An article by the Cleveland Clinic discusses how coloring can help relax your brain and reduce stress levels. They also reference a study conducted with cancer patients using Art Therapy to help relieve stress through coloring and other art activities.

Inspiration for my Adult Coloring Book

When I was a kid, like most of us, I loved coloring books. I found it fun using crayons, markers, and colored pencils to color in the fun patterns and worlds illustrators and artists had created. I would get lost coloring in and outside of the lines on the paper, and I also found it funny to change the color of a sea creature, sky background, or any object to purple, blue, or pink. My childhood was colorful, and I loved looking through the original drawings and making my coloring pages. I feel that this experience significantly impacted pursuing this passion of being an artist and children's book illustrator.
Over the years, I have created many fun art and detailed illustrations that get viewed once or added to Instagram and Facebook and then fade into the ether. So, I decided to compile some of my favorite illustrations from over the years as well as a few newer designs for coloring and created an adult coloring book.

When I started thinking about creating a coloring book for adults, I had two goals in mind:
1. My adult coloring book needs to be fun and different from others
2. Include drawings that make me smile and could bring joy to others

After several months of reviewing some of my older illustrations and finalizing the cover design for the book, I am proud to announce that I have launched my first coloring book for adults on Amazon. The War of Art: Chess Art for Chess Players

I titled my latest chess drawing: The War of Art. The title of the drawing helps illustrate the multiple thoughts that were going on within me at the time and a process some artists and creatives go through. The subject matter I selected to convey my message was another chess drawing that adds to my ongoing collection of chess artwork. Chess is one of my favorite games because the game is strategic and there are so many possibilities and outcomes. I don't think I have played the same game twice. Like chess, art can be fluid and strategic and has so many possibilities.

Pen and Ink Chess Drawing

I started working on this chess drawing in 2013 or 2014. It's been quite the journey for this pen and ink drawing as the paper has managed to withstand the six or seven years I have been working on it, two relocations, and many late nights thinking about what to do next.
Just like in chess, with many chess players and chess pieces, a drawing, painting, or song can be a war. The chess board is the battle ground in the game and the canvas or paper is the battle ground when creating art. The artist is trying to win the internal battle and tell the perfect story or express the emotions that the creation was intended to do.

My chess drawing allows you to step inside my mind during a chess match. Constantly analyzing the board and searching for the next move to win the small battles and eventually the war. Don't take your eyes off the opponent's bishop or knight, checkmate and defeat is always a move away on the chess board.

A Chess Drawing for Serious Chess Players

With this new drawing, I wanted to take the viewer into the chess board and allow them to dive deep inside this drawing. I want viewers to look to find all the chess pieces hidden in the nooks and crannies of the board. Is there a checkmate? Will a queen be taken for another chess peice on the board? I have been researching nursery wall art ideas to see what is available for new moms and dads and also seeking out inspiration for some modern nursery wall art for a room in my house. Secret time, I have been creating original nursery wall art because I am about to become a dad!

After much research and much debate, we ultimately decided to paint the nursery walls a neutral light gray color. This allowed us to brighten the room through a ton of colors via accent items like: a colorful polka dotted area rug, framed watercolor paintings, nursery art themed paintings, animal prints, colorful curtains, and others kids wall art that contrasted beautifully against the neutral nursery theme we planned. Needless to say, we created a perfectly cute nursery full of love and colors for our baby girl.

Unique Coloring Pages for Kids

One of these coloring pages is not like the others. This week I took the free coloring pages in a different direction. I went into the attic for some unique coloring page ideas and let my mind go free. This was the outcome. It's much different from the animal coloring pages I have been creating but, I still like it.

I pulled a character from my sketchbook and put him on the main stage, the internet. The pollen is flying right now, and so, I incorporated that on the coloring page. Your kids will have fun adding different colors to the pollen balls and trees.

It's beneficial to expose your kids to different styles of art and objects that are more abstract and not the typical images they see every day.

Welcome to May. A color-filled new week brings a new free animal coloring page. This week's coloring page highlights a high flying Turtle in the sky! Turtles love the water, but this is no ordinary turtle. This turtle is enjoying the (soon to be) bright sun in the sky. Hopefully, Spring will start springing here in New England, and we can start seeing some warmer weather.

This turtle coloring page is also free and available for download and printing today. The cute ocean reptile finds himself swimming through the clouds and high above the friendly snail. The snail looks up at the turtle, wondering why are you in the sky? The sun is bursting through the clouds with the hopes of warming up your children's soul during this pandemic.

As you know, I don't create boring coloring pages for kids, and this week's coloring page is no different, which means this is no average, run of the mill snail. This sneaky little snail, at the bottom of the page, is a cloud producing an animal or shelled gastropod (if you want to be scientific about it)! And he loves creating clouds! The more clouds there are, the better for this little snail. It's fun how imagination works.

Have your children experiment with coloring the clouds in different colors. They don't have to be white or gray. They can be green purple or even yellow!
