"If you can't figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right into your purpose."
- Bishop T.D. Jakes
I knew from the early stages of my life that I wanted to be an artist. Ever since I was a little kid I have been creating in some form or another. When I was in first grade a teacher gave me my own personal set of markers and that made me feel special. She probably gave everyone their own set of markers, but it doesn't matter because that moment helped push me towards the creative road in life.
For me, it's a place where I feel free. Where I allow my mind to take a break and allow the subconscious to take over. This place I'm talking about is my sketchbook. Think of my sketchbook as a visual diary. It's a place I go to vent, relax, play, and to simply just be. It's easy for anyone to get lost in their own thoughts and for me it helps to capture these thoughts in my sketchbooks.
Here's a drawing a I created showing you how my mind works when I am in my flow state.
I love creating unique art that comes from my natural state of flow. I've been creating pen and ink art right from the beginning of my life. I started out like most artists with pencils, crayons, and markers of course. However, my early years (7-10), is when I started to create pen and ink drawings during class at school.
My love for pen and ink art grew. Over the next 15 years and several hundred pen and ink drawings later, it became one of my favorite mediums to use for a couple of reasons:
I love the way my drawings look and how fluid and concise I could be
I can take my pen and notebook with me everywhere I go and I can be "in my studio"
There are so many different ways you can create art with this one medium
By experimenting with pen ink art at the beginning of my artistic career, I was able to cultivate my series called Back Rooms of My Mind.
Here are a few of my favorite pen and ink artists:
